Is multi level marketing affiliate program the same as MLM pyramid scheme? The answer is an emphatic NO! However I will like to provide some insights to my answer.

You see, over the last few years, affiliate marketing has grown in leaps and bound, and it is estimated to gross a staggering $230 billion in year 2008!

However, it is funny that, despite the glaring mode of operation of the multi level marketing affiliate program, some fellows still tend to equate it with MLM – multi level marketing.

The antagonists premised their arguments on the reason that affiliate program opportunity seems to legitimately benefit both parties involve.

I mean it benefits both the merchants and the affiliate marketers. Yes this positive fact is responsible for the ‘belly aching’ going on in some quarters. They claimed affiliate marketing is a twin-brother of the much-hated MLM – multi level pyramid schemes! What a horrendous comparison?

What then is MLM? As I’d explained above, multi-level marketing is also known in several quarters as pyramid scheme, which in most cases, are not legitimate at all. Typically, MLM - multi-level marketing operates by signing up people to promote or sell their products, which really do not exist.

It allows those at the top of the pyramid to earn money by collecting commission off of the ‘sales’ made by the downlines in the pyramid scheme.

Efforts to refine MLM. However, in the past few years some companies came up with MLM pyramid schemes parading real and legitimate products such as supplements and phone cards.

But unfortunately, most people still innately regard and label any MLM as “bad news” and dishonest program.

Multi level marketing affiliate program is vastly DIFFERENT from MLM - pyramid schemes. Traditionally, an affiliate merchant pays another site (affiliate marketer) to send potential customers to its own site.

However, in affiliate marketing business model, the customer is not deceived and there is no prior financial transaction between the affiliate and customers. Again, the way money is made in multi level marketing affiliate programs is dissimilar from every MLM pyramid scheme.

It is true that the merchant - the company that owns the product - makes more money. And this is very normal just like in any legitimate offline business. The merchant makes more money because it owns the service or product range.

As an example, it is unthinkable that the re-sellers of Microsoft products and services will make more money than Microsoft Company! And it is not possible for a single Amazon.com affiliate to sell more books and earn more cash than Amazon itself.

The truth is that multi level marketing affiliate program allows both the affiliate marketers and merchant earn lots of cash. In addition, legitimate products and services are offered by the merchants and affiliates are happy to set up website educating web surfers about them. 

Now I believe you are more enlightened, and able to decipher the difference between them? I want you to realize that multi level marketing affiliate program and MLM scheme share nothing in common.

Also you should realize that the vast majority of pyramid schemes are illegitimate, dishonest and operate as ‘fly-by-night’ companies. While multi level affiliate marketing programs are LEGAL, and widely accepted as one of the most effective and valuable tools in the entire Internet advertising world.
